Natural Refrigerant Air Conditioners

Advanced Air Conditioners for the Australian Climate – Efficient up to 60°C

At Polaris Technologies, our air-conditioning systems employ eco-friendly natural refrigerants, which boast a minimal global warming potential (GWP) of 0.7 and pose no threat to the atmosphere if released. They are called natural refrigerants because they are naturally occurring substances that are not synthetic and are non-toxic. Global warming potential of a refrigerant is a measure of how much heat a greenhouse gas traps in the atmosphere over a given time. The higher the GWP the more potent the greenhouse potential

The amazing energy savings and clean operation achieved by our natural refrigerant units makes chemical refrigerant air conditioning systems look like energy devouring toxic pits.

Polaris Technologies natural refrigerant air conditioning units have no PFAS forever chemicals. The vast majority of HVAC manufactures worldwide use chemical refrigerants that contain PFAS. These toxic chemicals take thousands of years to break down and have already contaminated the atmosphere and our waterways. PFAS chemicals are now present in almost every person alive today following their introduction in the 1950s through products like Teflon and chemical refrigerants along with the and 10,000 other PFAS chemicals.

Our Polaris HideAway air conditioners require no outdoor condenser units and are a revolution in the Australian HVAC industry. Manufactured in Australia and MEPS approved the systems are available to suit residential, light commercial and larger commercial application. Built as conventional reverse cycle split systems these units do not need an outdoor space.

Natural Refrigerants – Do No Harm. Superior to both local and international competitors, these innovative HVAC systems efficiently operate at temperatures up to 60 degrees Celsius. The high critical temperature of M60 Hydrocarbon ensures exceptional durability in Australia’s challenging climate, a testament to the expertise of the engineers behind the design.

In comparison, chemical refrigerant units contribute to atmospheric damage and leave a toxic legacy of PFAS forever chemicals, prompting impending EU bans. The Engas M60 hydrocarbon refrigerant is up to 34% more energy-efficient than its chemical counterparts, featuring reduced operating pressures that minimize wear on compressors, vibrations, and provide smoother operation. Additionally, natural refrigerant units only require half the refrigerant charge by weight compared to chemical alternatives.

Recognising their potential to combat climate change, sustainability managers at multinational corporations, as well as Australian Federal and State Governments and local councils, are now championing the adoption of natural refrigerants in HVAC systems.

Commercial buildings, offices, hotels, apartments, and most other applications.

Polaris GreenSmart Mini VRF systems have demonstrated their effectiveness in numerous high-rise residential buildings, delivering exceptional efficiency and ease of installation. Utilizing the incredibly efficient M60 Engas refrigerant and designed in Australia, these systems are gradually replacing traditional toxic chemical refrigerant VRF systems.

The versatility of fan coils, high-wall, or cassette units makes these systems an ideal choice for hotels, resorts, high-rise accommodations, and domestic applications. A prominent developer in Australia has even chosen to exclusively adopt natural refrigerant HVAC systems, moving away from a major manufacturer.

The key to Polaris GreenSmart Mini VRF success lies in its remarkably low refrigerant volume, which is only 50% that of its competitors. The cooling effect of the M60 refrigerant per gram is twice as powerful as any toxic F-gas available today, providing unparalleled performance and eco-friendly benefits.

A Brief History of Natural Refrigerants

Hydrocarbon refrigerants were among the three original refrigerants used at the inception of refrigeration in the late 1700s. All of these natural refrigerants raised serious safety concerns, with numerous accidents resulting in injuries and fatalities. The technology to ensure safety during manufacturing did not exist at the time, much like early aviation.

The introduction of Freon chemicals in the mid-1930s made refrigeration and air conditioning accessible to the general public, promoting them as safe for the environment and end users.

In the mid-1980s, the damage to the ozone layer became apparent, forcing governments to pressure refrigerant manufacturers to develop a new generation of chemicals.

Now, we are witnessing yet another shift as the chemical industry is being compelled to change direction once more in order to reduce global warming potential (GWP). This change has been the most rapid yet, as governments worldwide are on the verge of enforcing another transition to remove HFO refrigerants due to the release of “forever chemicals” (PFAS) into the atmosphere.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants and carbon dioxide, as the original and only refrigerants still widely available, present a sustainable solution to this growing risk. They cause no harm and will not require any further changes in direction.
